BETH HOECKEL

I look at a wide variety of work from classic masterpieces to random flickr streams; local DIY galleries to major art institutions. I keep the realm of influence open to other fields as well such as music and literature, which can be equally inspirational.

Beth Hoeckel is a multidisciplinary artist from Baltimore Maryland USA. Beth is currently a full-time freelance artist creating collage and mixed media works for arts' sake, as well as for a wide variety of clients. She creates all of her pieces by collaging and piecing together different images and materials to create final images of a mix of realist and surrealist. She takes inspiration from many different sources to create her work (as seen in the quote above) ranging from photography, paintings, sculture to even music and literature. All of her pieces seem to have a pre-1980's theme to them and have quite a vintage feel yet still being abstract and very intriguing.

MY RECREATIONS

This is one of my final images inspired by Beth. I created this using Photoshop CC again, the same as all of my other artist recreations. I took into account the styles and looks of the types of media that Beth uses in her artwork, and I noticed that a lot of the time, the background image looks slightly distorted and not fluid or clean as they look old or vintage. So, I got the background picture of the sea from google, and I chose this as it is originally a vintage polariod picture so it gives the same effect that Beth uses. After analysing the positions and poses of the overlayed pictures of people that she uses, I decided to use photos of gymnasts but use the edge of the sea on the background image as their 'beam' to balance on. I think this gives the abstract factor to the final image that is always present in Hoeckel's work as hers is mostly surrealist, which is appropriate as you will obviously not see this event happen in real life.
